A Piece Of Cake!

In this creative workshop, we sorted through idiomatic expressions in English and their meaning. This workshop had a two-part session with two different teachers. After all, two heads are better than one. The result? Our students left with a plethora of expressions they could use in multiple contexts.

In a round of guess-the-meaning, our student worked through different expressions and tried to find an equivalent meaning in their own language. They made sense of the idioms as they used them on their own in sentences. Later, in a time crunching game of beat-the-clock, they had two minutes to sift through various expressions. Finally, we finished off with an idioms review game of Snakes and Ladders.  They were all ears when they heard some friendly competition was involved.

At the beginning the cat got their tongue, but as the workshop went on the teachers were on cloud nine because of how well they had hit the books in two sessions.

We hope they break a leg as they strive to incorporate these expressions in their everyday speech. Now they know many idioms, and can easily use them. We´d say idioms for them are now a piece of cake!

 

¡Pan Comido!

En este taller creativo, repasamos modismos en inglés y sus significados. Este taller tuvo una sesión de dos partes con dos profesores diferentes. Después de todo, cuatro ojos ven más que dos.  ¿El resultado? Nuestros alumnos adquirieron una gran cantidad de expresiones que podrán utilizar en varios contextos.

En una ronda de adivina-el-significado, los  participantes trabajaron a través de diferentes expresiones e intentaron encontrar un significado equivalente en español.  Luego, trabajaron en equipo contra el reloj: tuvieron dos minutos para tamizar a las diversas expresiones. Finalmente, rematamos el vocabulario  con un juego de mesa de  serpientes y escaleras.  Eran todos oídos al aprender que cierta competencia amistosa estaba implicada.

Al principio, les había comida la lengua el gato, pero conforme avanzaba el taller los profesores estaban en  el séptimo cielo por lo bien que hincaron los codos en dos sesiones.

Les deseamos  mucha suerte al incorporar estas expresiones en su habla cotidiana. Ahora que saben muchas expresiones pueden utilizarlas fácilmente. Ahora decir modismos en ingles ¡es pan comido!

How to Pinpoint Prepositions

In, On, Under, Behind, Between… and the list goes on. It sounds easy right? Well, prepositions in English are actually quite tricky because they don´t stand the test of direct translation. Prepositions change meaning according to context as well.

In our workshop this week we discovered some rules for prepositions of time and place. We did an in depth cross analysis of times where prepositions follow a similar pattern. We differentiated the meanings of sentences with different prepositions added to them.

 

Here is a concrete example to demonstrate what we´ve explored:

You are in the bulding. = You are inside the building.

You are at the building. = You are at the same ground level of the building, but have not specified if you are inside or not.

You are on the building. = You are on top of the building, on the rooftop.

¿Cómo Determinar con Precisión las Preposiciones?

 

A, Ante, Bajo, Cabe, Con, Contra, De, Desde, En, Entre…y la lista sigue. Suena fácil ¿no? Bueno, las preposiciones en inglés son bastante complicadas porque no pasan la prueba de la traducción literal. Las preposiciones también cambian de significado según el contexto.

En nuestro taller esta semana hemos descubierto algunas reglas para las preposiciones de tiempo y lugar. Hicimos un análisis de los tiempos en que las preposiciones siguen un patrón similar. Diferenciamos el significado de frases con diferentes preposiciones añadidas.

Aquí hay un ejemplo concreto para demostrar lo que hemos explorado:

 

Estás en el edificio. =  (en ingles con ¨in¨) Estás dentro del edificio.

Estás en el edificio. = (en ingles con ¨at¨) Estás en el mismo al mismo nivel del edificio, pero no has especificado si estás dentro o no.

Estás en el edificio. = (en ingles con ¨on¨)  Estás en la parte superior del edificio, en la azotea.

Welcome on Board!

You have your boarding pass in hand, you´re luggage has already been checked. You have already been through the boarding gate. There is a slight delay before take-off, but at least you got the aisle seat. Does this situation sound familiar? It´s you, in an airport scenario. Now imagine going through all this but in English! Don´t panic, that´s why we´re here.
In this Airport themed workshop, we took our students on a journey of airport vocabulary and role-plays. Our students shared their experiences with e-booking confirmations, weight allowances for luggage, and security checks. They pretended to be airline workers and first class travelers. By the end of the session, they were ready for a smooth landing at any airport, in English or in Spanish.

¡Bienvenidos a bordo!

Tienes tu tarjeta de embarque en mano, ya se ha registrado el equipaje. Has pasado por la puerta de embarque. Hay un ligero retraso antes del despegue, pero al menos tienes el asiento del pasillo. ¿Te suena esta situación? Eres tú, en un aeropuerto. Ahora imagina pasar por todo esto, pero en inglés! No te asustes, por esto estamos aquí.

En este taller temático del aeropuerto, llevamos a nuestros estudiantes por un viaje de vocabulario y puestas en escena. Nuestros estudiantes compartieron sus experiencias personales con confirmaciones de e-booking, consignas de peso para el equipaje, y controles de seguridad. Posaron como actores siendo trabajadores de la aerolínea y viajeros de primera clase. Al final de la sesión, estaban listos para un aterrizaje sin contratiempos en cualquier aeropuerto, en inglés o en español.

Flour and Flower, Ate and Eight, Hour and Our. What do these pairs of words have in common? They´re homophones! In this workshop, we discovered words that sound the same, but have different meanings. Pronunciation here was not a priority as homophones sound the same, so the main focus was on semantics. In a guess-the- meaning game, students were able to relate images of words to their corresponding word. Through this activity, students were able to enhance their spelling skills as well as build vocabulary.

Vaca y Baca, Hierba y Hierva, Harte y Arte. ¿Qué tienen en común estas palabras emparejadas? ¡Son homófonas! En este taller, descubrimos palabras que suenan igual, pero tienen diferentes significados. La pronunciación en este taller no fue una prioridad ya que las homófonas suenan igual, por lo que el enfoque principal fue en la semántica. En un juego de adivinar el significado, los estudiantes fueron capaces de relacionar imágenes de palabras con su palabra correspondiente. A través de esta actividad, los participantes fueron capaces de mejorar sus habilidades de ortografía, y al mismo tiempo, ampliaron vocabulario.

Is it football or soccer? Hood or Bonnet? Windshield or Windscreen?  Whichever you choose, it´s all English anyway. In our workshop, titled Football or Soccer? We discovered the differences between varieties of English. The English language has over ten different variations. In this workshop, we concentrated on British and American English differences.

 

Saying football instead of soccer is the tip of the iceberg. Apart from vocabulary differences, we also found discrepancies in pronunciation, grammar, and spelling. Our participants engaged with us as they listened to native accents, then produced phonemes in a British accent, and then in an American accent. They waved the flag of the corresponding country in a fast-paced vocabulary drill. They tested each other’s knowledge in a pronunciation game, and finished off with a round of British English versus American English Jeapordy quiz.

 

At the end of the workshop, whether they chose to say football or soccer didn´t matter, the important thing was that they were speaking English! Which do you prefer? Leave a comment below and let us know!

 

¿Cómo se dice ¨futbol¨ en inglés, ¨Football¨, o ¨Soccer¨? ¿Y el capó de un coche, es ¨Bonnet¨ o ¨Hood¨? ¿Alguna vez has visto parabrisas escrito ¨windshield¨, pero por otro lado has escuchado ¨windscreen¨? Sea la que sea la opción que elijas, todas las opciones son inglés.El inglés tiene más de diez variaciones diferentes. En este taller, nos concentramos en las diferencias entre el inglés británico y el inglés americano.

 

Decir ¨soccer¨ en vez de ¨football¨ es la punta del iceberg. Aparte de las diferencias de vocabulario, también encontramos discrepancias en pronunciación, gramática y ortografía. Nuestros participantes se implicaron en el taller y escuchar acentos nativos, después produjeron fonemas con acento británico y después en americano. Agitaron la bandera del país correspondiente en un ejercicio de vocabulario rápido. Pusieron a prueba su conocimiento de sonidos en ambas variaciones en un juego de pronunciación. Terminamos con una ronda de ¨Jeapordy¨ donde los participantes sumaban puntos al contestar preguntas sobre el inglés británico versus inglés americano.

 

Al final del taller no importó si decidieron optar por ¨football¨ o ¨soccer¨ en su vocabulario, ¡lo importante fue que hablasen inglés! ¿Y tu cuál ingles prefieres? ¡Deja un comentario abajo y háznoslo saber!

Get the Job!

You add your name, interests, experiences, maybe a picture, but no, it´s not your profile on a social media site, it´s a CV! In our CV Workshop we explored what a professional CV looks like in English, as well as learned which information is useful to say to get the job you want. We saw CV-related vocabulary through charades, and tried our hand at a role-play through a grueling interview. The interviewees put their new vocabulary to the test as they answered every question thrown at them. Their hard work has paid off. Our students have impressed us, you´re hired!

 

Añades tu nombre, intereses, experiencias, quizá alguna foto, pero no, no es tu perfil en una red social, ¡es tu currículo! En nuestro taller de currículos en inglés, exploramos en qué consiste un currículo profesional, y aprendimos el vocabulario relacionado a los currículos a través de un juego de gestos. Hicimos una dramatización de una entrevista extenuante. Los entrevistados pusieron su nuevo vocabulario adquirido a prueba al contestar cada pregunta que les lanzábamos. El trabajo duro paga, y nuestros alumnos nos han impresionado, ¡Están ustedes contratados!

 

On April 26^th we launched our Pronunciation Workshop at the Social Club. Pronunciation is a complex matter, as it´s often the cause of miscommunication, but who says it can´t be fun? In order to combat that, this workshop explored the mispronunciation experiences and broke down the pronunciation process into three phases:  Listening, Distinguishing, and Producing. We´ve had competitions, won at phoneme bingo, and played gestures all in the name of pronunciation.  How? You might ask yourself; through minimal pairs, (two words that sound the same but differ in one sound.) Our students nailed it! Do you want to give it a try?

Taller de Pronunciación

El 26 de abril, hemos lanzado nuestro taller de pronunciación en el club social. La pronunciación en inglés es algo complejo, y muchas veces es la causa de la falta de comunicación, pero ¿Quién dijo que no puede ser divertida? Para combatirla, este taller explora la pronunciación en tres fases: escuchar, diferenciar y producir. Hemos competido, ganado en el juego “bingo de fonemas”, y jugado con gestos, todo esto en nombre de la pronunciación. ¿Cómo lo hemos conseguido? Usando lo que llamamos pares mínimos (dos palabras semejantes que se diferencian en un solo sonido). ¡Nuestros participantes lo clavaron! ¿Quieres probarlo?
